January 2021? September 2020? The issue surrounding the re-opening of schools has been marred with controversy. The Education CS doesn’t seem to have a clue or plan on how to go about it.
The CS, Prof. George Magoha has now said Schools will re-open in three weeks BUT will depend on the flattening of the COVID-19 curve.
‘‘In three weeks all the stakeholders will come together. We are observing the curve for at least two weeks and we will sit down and make a decision,” he said.
Prof. Magoha said the government will in the next three weeks make a decision on whether to reopen schools depending on the number of infections reported.
The CS was speaking Friday when touring Wote Technical Institute to assess COVID 19 preparedness. ‘‘I want to assume we can open earlier if it is possible. But conditions will determine the reopening,” added Magoha.
On institutions’ preparedness on Covid-19, the CS noted that some had done well while others were ill-prepared.
‘‘Some institutions like Bureti, Thika and Rift Valley Technical Institutes have done an excellent job on Covid-19 compliance, however, others are low and need to pull up their socks,” he said.
The CS also disclosed that each public secondary and primary school will get between 50 and 100 locally fabricated desks to ease reopening.
He said the desks will be made by Jua kali artisans to lower the cost and stimulate the economy.
