Man accused of killing Embu priest re-arrested after year on the run – The Informer

Detectives attached to Directorate of Criminal Investigation(DCI) have re-arrested a a man accused of killing Catholic Priest after he was released on bond a few days after his initial arrest.

Michael Mutunga, is accused of the gruesome murder of Farther Michael Maingi Kyengo on October 8,2019.

After his release, detectives said that Mutunga went into hiding and failed to appear in court, forcing the court to issue a warrant for his arrest.

“Detectives have for the second time been looking for him and this afternoon, managed to smoke him out of his hideout in one of Nairobi’s informal settlements,” stated DCI.

According to police report, the clergyman’s lifeless body whose throat had been slit, had been put in a gunny bag, before being disposed on the bed of river Gathingiri.

Kyengo’s remains were later found buried in a shallow grave on a dry riverbed in Embu.

Days later, detectives arrested the main suspect with crucial exhibits linking him to the crime.

A sharp knife suspected to be the murder weapon was among the exhibit and some of his blood stained clothes which he had tried to wash in vain.

Despite the evidence against him, the suspect was released after his arraignment in Embu court on a Ksh.300,000 bail.

DCI said that they will do everything within their powers within criminal justice system to get justice.

“May the innocent servant of God slain for no reason at all get justice and DCI will do all within her powers within the criminal justice system, where we pray we are all on board,” said DCI.

The suspect has been on the run for the past one year.
