At least thirteen passengers perished on Monday, 31 January 2022, in Mandera County after the matatu they were travelling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the Arabia-Mandera Highway.
The Public Service Vehicle (PSV) was moving from Arabia to Mandera town during the incident that also left eight others with serious injuries.
The attack happened just half a kilometre from the border town of Mandera.
According to multiple reports, the IED had been planted by people believed to be Al Shabaab sympathisers.
Police have since launched investigations into the incident even as the exact number of casualties remain unclear.
According to eyewitnesses explosion was heard at around 6 in the morning.
North Eastern Regional Commander, George Seda, noted that they received reports of the accident from other road users.
He added that they were working around the clock to ensure that they establish what exactly happened.
As of the publishing of this post, no arrest had been made yet.
The incident comes after over five foreign embassies issued terror alert warnings.
The governments of France and the Netherlands in Europe issued warnings of possible terror attacks in Nairobi.
However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs fired back at the alerts, terming them a violation of the normal communication channels regarding national security issues.
It affirmed that the government was able to communicate to its own citizens directly and has the ability to respond to external security threats for their sake.
