Flood are a terrible menace that is affecting the country right now. Earlier today, Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa announced that deadly waters have so far claimed 285 lives.
Addressing the media, the CS also noted that the number of people affected has risen to reach 810,655. Two weeks ago, the number of deaths caused by floods shot from 194 to 237.
The number of affected households had also risen to 161,000 up from 100,000.
“That is a very high number compared to those Kenyans who have lost their lives to COVID-19 who are about 33,” CS Wamalwa said.
The Nairobi City Water and Sewage Company has issued a list of the areas set to experience water shortage in Nairobi after the damage of Sasumua water supply system.
In a press release, the Nairobi City Water stated that a massive landslide occurred at Kieni Forest on Thursday night, May 8, 2020, and damaged the main pipeline which supplies water from the Sasumua Dam to Nairobi.
As result, several areas within Nairobi will experience water shortage as the amount of water not reaching Nairobi is 12 percent of the water supply in the city.
“The amount of water not reaching Nairobi is 61,000m3 per day (12% of the city supply) hence the above areas will receive water with low pressure during the supply day under the water rationing programme,” read the statement.
Here are the areas set to experience water shortage according to Nairobi water;
- Areas along Waiyaki Way, Kangemi, Lavington, Westlands, Parklands, M.P. Shah Hospital, Aga Khan Hospital and ILRI, Upper Hill, Kilimani.
- Nairobi Hospital, Kenyatta Hospital and Community.
- University of Nairobi main campus, Upper and Lower Kabete campus, University of Nairobi main campus hall of residence and Kenyatta University Parklands law campuses.
- Estates around Kenyatta market, Langata, Jamhuri, Ngando, Rituta/Satelite, Dagoretti corne, Kawangware.
- Areas along Langata, Madaraka Estate, Mbagathi and Ngong roads, Karen.
- Loresho, Nyari, Kitusuru, estate along Peponi Road, New Muthaiga and Thigiri ridge areas.
On Tuesday, the Nairobi water said repairs have already begun and the temporary reinstatement work expected to be completed by May 31, 2020.
“The work will take 6 weeks at an estimated cost of Ksh.362million. Site preparation and construction of access road is in progress to facilitate transportation of materials deep inside the Aberdare Ranges in Kieni Forest,” read the statement.
The company said the temporary reinstatement works will be completed on Sunday and normal water supply restored.
