Netizens have sparked a fresh buzz surrounding the Director of Criminal investigations (DCI) George Kinoti and his recent conviction.
This is after the DCI Boss was spotted roaming free at the Kamiti Maximum Prison on Thursday evening, despite being handed a four-month prison sentence earlier in the day.
When making the judgement, Justice Anthony Mrima found Kinoti guilty of contempt of court in a case where he failed to return a firearm seized from Nairobi businessman and ODM Party Presidential hopeful Jimi Wanjigi.
He was, therefore, ordered to surrender to prison authorities immediately so he can begin his four-month term in jail.
But hours after the ruling was delivered, Kinoti was spotted at the maximum holding facility alongside a host of top government officials, including Interior CS Fred Matiangi and his ICT counterpart Joe Mucheru.
This left a section of Kenyans on social media rather confused and led to some of them taking it upon themselves to call for the arrest of the police boss.
“Hello DCI Kenya, I would like to report under the hashtag #FichuaKwaDCI that a convicted criminal was sighted today in the company of CS Matiang’i and Mucheru,” wrote one netizen.
In another post seen by kenyanbulletin.com, a different Kenyan wrote to the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, urging him to obey and execute the court’s order.
“Please arrest Kinoti as the court order,” he tweeted.
Kinoti had gone to Kamiti to accompany CS Matiang’i and other officials in receiving three terror convicts who were captured after a daring escape from the prison earlier in the week.
The three who include Mohamed Ali Abikar, Joseph Juma Odhiambo and Musharaf Abdalla Akhulunga were arrested in Kitui as they plotted to flee to Somalia.
The group is reported to have dug a hole on the wall to escape the heavily-guarded facility on Monday, leading to a countrywide manhunt and changes in the management of the prisons.
Kenya’s head of prisons Wycliffe Ogallo was sacked and arrested on Wednesday following the escape of three dangerous terrorists.
