Newly appointed Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu on Wednesday nominated former Mbotela Councillor Paul Mutunga Mutungi as her deputy.
This is after the position was left vacant following her swearing-in as Nairobi’s third Governor on Tuesday.
Mutungi is the current Nairobi County Chief of Staff.
He landed the job four years after he unsuccessfully ran for Embakasi South parliamentary seat on a Jubilee ticket but lost to ODM’s Julius Mawathe in 2017.
In an official letter to Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura, Kananu explained some of the reasons why she settled on the choice.
She revealed that when picking Mutungi, she considered leadership qualities, professional qualifications, as well as gender balance.
“In considering this nomination, I have taken into account his professional qualifications, leadership qualities, gender balance and competencies necessary for the Deputy Governor’s seat,” she wrote.
She has additionally requested Speaker Mutura facilitate to immediately launch the vetting process with a view of a smooth transition.

Earlier in the day, Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju had confirmed that a decision had already been made on who will deputise Kananu after wide consultations within the handshake team.
During her swearing-in ceremony at KICC on Tuesday, November 16, Kananu vowed to ensure that Nairobians get better and quality services.
Kananu, who is now the third Nairobi governor, said she will serve the people of Nairobi to her level best for the 9 months she will be in charge.
