President William Ruto’s nominee for the position of Inspector General of Police, Japheth Koome, appeared before Parliamentary Vetting Committee on Tuesday, November 8, to answer questions from the people’s representatives.
The police veteran valued his net worth at around Ksh89 million, a cumulative amount arising from his investments, property and shares.
Lawmakers, however, hard-pressed him to explain his net worth and, particularly, his source of income.
Koome, who currently serves as the commandant of the National Police Service Training Campus in Kiganjo, broke down his wealth into a piece of land at his rural home, vehicles, shares and financial saving.
“I have an account where my salary goes to. I also have an account with Police Sacco where my shares are worth about Ksh57,000,” Koome explained.
He further narrated that he is a passionate farmer, as such, he bought two truckers to assist him in his agricultural activities.
“The land in my rural home is about seven acres. I have two plots of land within my rural home market centre. I also have a plot of land in Nairobi, and that is where I currently live, and two other plots in Kitengela, which I bought through Police Sacco,” Koome explained.
He, nonetheless, explained that he has a liability of Ksh 1.1 million in loan.
Koome rose through the ranks to become a Commandant and a Senior Assistant Inspector-General of Police.
He is also a Civil Engineer by training, having graduated from the University of Nairobi in 1990.
Ruto nominated him to replace former Police Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai, who proceeded to a terminal leave.
Mutyambai’s term was sent to end in April 2023.
