NPS Resumes Use Of Alcoblow Due to Increased Drunk Driving

The National Police Service (NPS) has today announced the resumption of alcoblow breathalyzer tests across major towns in the country in the wake of increased road accidents blamed on speeding and drunk driving.

In a statement released Friday, the Inspector General of Police and the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) assured the public that measures to prevent the spread of Coronavirus shall be in place when undertaking the tests.

In the new measures, police will also undertake nationwide enforcement operations to address factors such as speeding, lane indiscipline, assessment of general compliance with Pubic Service Vehicles (PSV) licensing requirements, and a crackdown on unroadworthy vehicles among other traffic offenses.

The report indicates that 2,689 people lost their lives between 1st January and 30th September 2020 compared to the same period last year where 2,655 lives were lost.

The statistics translate to a 1.3% increase in fatalities resulting from road carnage.

“Motorcyclist and pillion passenger deaths increased by 44.94% and 19.44% respectively,” reads the statement.

The report further indicates that a total of 60 persons lost their lives from 2nd to 4th October this year.
