Number of Kenyans who viewed Mzee Moi’s body revealed

Parliament has revealed the number of people who viewed the body of the late President Daniel arap Moi at the National Assembly buildings over the last three days.

While the turnout was lower on Saturday, February 8, the number of members of the public arriving at Parliament to see Moi grew exponentially as the deadline approached.

By close of Monday evening, the figure stood at a staggering 213,000 with a total of 72,500 people having turned up to see the remains of the former President that day alone.

This is in the light of the fact that only 24,863 people turned up to see the body at Parliament Buildings on Saturday while another 115,637 viewed the body on Sunday.

While public viewing of the body has officially come to a close, an official interdenominational prayer service awaits the former head of state at the Nyayo Stadium on Tuesday.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i gazetted February 11th as a public holiday to mourn the late President Moi.

Sunday, President Kenyatta arrived at Nyayo Stadium to check on the progress of preparing the venue for the last public function before Moi’s burial.

Already, members of the press have camped at Moi’s Kabarak home in Nakuru County where he is set to be interred in an invite-only gravesite affair after a public ceremony at Kabarak University.

By Sunday, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) engineers were making the final touches on the gravesite where Moi will be buried next to his late wife Lena.
