Members of County Assembly (MCAs) in Nyamira are sleeping on their oversight role as the county continues to lose millions through ghost workers despite public outcry.
Nyamira MCAs have kept quiet by giving the matter a deaf ear as they embrace corruption by protecting and dressing up the scandal.
It is now becoming difficult to kick out ghost workers in the county government because they were brought on board by a section of the MCAs, senior officers and some influential political leaders in the county.
Investigations have established that a majority of the ghost workers were recruited under the influence of the MCAs, members of the county public service board, MPsn and senior officers in the administration of Governor Amos Nyaribo, thus making it difficult to smoke them out.
The said ghost workers are believed to have played a key role in the election of the MCAs, MPs, Senator, Governor and Woman Rep positions, and were rewarded by being handed positions in the government and individual leadership which they assisted to bring on board.
The CPSB chairman Peter Kereri, leader of the majority in the assembly, Elijah Osiemo, and Governor Nyaribo are being accused of shedding crocodile tears and lying to the people of Nyamira over ghost workers’ issue since they know how they were brought into the system.
Some of the ghost workers are relative and friends to members of CPSB who argue that it is their time and turn to eat and recruit.
The issue of ghost workers remains a nightmare in Nyamira county where the DCIO, Paul Makonge, recently arrested two senior officers in connection with the ghost workers and released them on cash bail.
Makonge said the two senior HR officials were arrested after investigations revealed that they had employed their close family members who continued to draw huge salaries from the county coffers since June 2021 without reporting for work.
The arrests followed complaints by Governor Amos Nyaribo, who admitted that ghost workers had been fleecing the local government millions of shillings and undermining services to the taxpayers for a number of years.
