Orange Democratic Movement saved face in the Ganda by-election by trouncing over Aisha Jumwa and her favourite candidate in the Ganda by-election on Thursday, October 17.

Nation reported that the Malindi MP failed to wrest the seat from ODM.

Reuben Katana of ODM, who lost his uncle Gumbao Jola in an ugly interaction with Jumwa, won with 4177 votes.

He beat independent candidate Abdul Omar who came second with 2331 votes. Joseph Kiponda of Jubilee came third with 589 votes.

ODM also bagged Abakaile Ward seat in another by-election on the same day. The party took to social media to congratulate Katana

“Congratulations Reuben Mwamure Katana and Mohamed Sheikh Ali for your victories in Ganda Ward in Malindi Constituency and Abakaile Ward in Daadab Constituency respectively. We are proud of you. Now go and serve your people,” ODM tweeted.

The Gand by-election was marred by violence prior to the elections. On Tuesday, October 15, Katana lost his uncle who was shot dead in a confrontation with Jumwa.

The rebel MP was arrested a day later and was released at Ksh 1 million bond or Ksh 500,000 cash bail after being arraigned in court on Thursday, October 18.

A petition by the prosecution to have Jumwa and her aide Geofrey Okuto detained for 21 days was thrown out of court on grounds that the police lacked concrete evidence.

Jumwa is also under investigation over incitement to violence, assault, electoral offences and breach of the Elections Code of Conduct.

Police records also indicate that Jumwa was planning to disrupt the Ganda by-election scheduled for today (Thursday, October 17) using a gang of supporters from Takaungu in Kilifi County.
