Parliament seeks inquiry on the status of usage of Sports Fund since its inception – KBC

Luanda Member of Parliament Chris Omulele tabled a question on the floor of the house on Wednesday morning inquiring on the status of utilization of Sports Fund since its establishment through the enactment of the Sports Act 2013, Section 12, Part III.

The second term lawmaker and a member of Parliamentary Sports Committee further sought to know from the Cabinet Secretary of Sports,Heritage and Culture on whether the current Sports Fund Chief Executive Officer is qualified enough for the job.

“Could the CS explain whether the CEO of the National Sports Fund Board is duly qualified, duly gazetted and authorized to execute the mandate of the board as stipulated in the Sports Act 2013” he asked.

The National Sports Fund was identified as a flagship project in the Vision 2030 in order to raise funds to facilitate growth and development of the sports industry in the country.

In addition, the funds are meant to be used in training the necessary sports personnel and support the cash award scheme for the purpose of enhancing competitiveness among the country’s sports men and women.

In 2019,Kenyans demanded for an explanation of how a whopping 1 billion shillings was set aside for Sports Ministry was released to the Health Ministry.

It emerged that 1 billion shillings that had been allocated to support the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund was paid out to facilitate the removal of mobile clinic containers from the National Youth Service Yard in Miritini,hence causing public uproar among sports lovers in the country.

As at March 2020,the Kenyan government had spent Sh550 million during the preceding year to fund two golf tournaments and a golf talent academy but only allocated about Sh.403 million to finance the football, volleyball and rugby which have millions of followers and players in the country.
