A man of faith from the Kiserian area, Kajiado County is now in police custody after he attempted to defraud members of his congregation by faking his own kidnapping.
The man of God is alleged to have updated in the church WhatsApp group that he was kidnapped by an unknown assailant and was required to pay Sh500,000 as a ransom for his release.
The local pastor was reported missing and abducted only to be found confined in a small house by police who were conducting a search for him.
The man who was allegedly identified as James Kirangu was in a group of two young men who are alleged to have given him refuge. According to information from the police, the man was reported missing a few days ago by his church members.
“One of the church members David Namelok came to the police station and wrote a statement OB number 21/22/6/2020 where he indicated that their pastor was kidnapped and the kidnappers were asking for a ransom,” said the OCPD Kinyua Mugambi.
However, Kirangu’s plan was thwarted after the police with assistance from DCI investigators tracked his phone down to the house in the outskirts of Kiserian where he was found hidden by the two middle-aged men.
When questioned the pastor said he didn’t know “what came over him” to think about lying to have been kidnapped.
