Kenyans on social media had a string of unanswered questions after a viral video of a woman screaming and struggling in a speeding Probox emerged online on Sunday morning.
Kasarani OCPD Peter Mwanzo has confirmed solving a riddle that had troubled Kenyans at the weekend. According to Officer Mwanza the man has been fined Sh70,000, his car detained and his driving licence revoked.
“So far that’s the only information I can share. The rest will be said by the Police Spokesperson,” said Officer Mwanzo.
In the video, the white Toyota station wagon is seen speeding on Thika Road with its passenger door open and as a woman screams from the vehicle.
The video was taken from another moving car on the same highway, where female voices are heard expressing their dismay.
Sources who witnessed the incident said the female was picked up at Kenyatta University on Thika Road in the car which sped off as she screamed for help.
The video was first shared by Wilsons Derangle Ndirangu on Facebook who suspected the woman had been kidnapped.
“Guys, things are getting messy! A certain lady boarded a car at KU; nobody is sure whether it was a kidnapping or not. The driver realised someone is recording them and he moved from the highway to the service lane…As reported, it doesn’t look so well kindly share the video we might save the lady,” he said.
From the video, Kenyans online have called on police to investigate the incident which took place at night.
Sources at the Ruiru Police Station, who spoke to The Standard on Sunday afternoon, had suggested that the woman had been offered a lift. The case had not been reported by Sunday 2 pm.
“The woman had been offered a lift and then the driver and his crew turned into criminals. There is no official complaint other than this. The woman’s whereabouts remain unknown,” Ruiru police said on Sunday.
Today The Standard reached out to Ruiru DCIO Justus Ombati for a follow-up on the incident that had left Kenyans with more questions than answers.
“Kenyatta University is not in Ruiru, it is in Nairobi. Please reach out to Kasarani DCI,’ Ombati said before hanging up.
Efforts to get to the Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso were futile as our calls went unanswered.
“The woman who was captured screaming from the speeding car with an open “co-driver’s” door along Thika Road was refusing to spend the night at her boyfriend’s place according to Police Spokesman Bruno Shioso.”
Barely a fortnight ago, the DCI had arrested four suspects in Kahawa Wendani, Kiambu following a spate of abductions of travellers on the Thika Superhighway.
The four, in a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, were arrested while luring another victim following an operation by Ruiru-based officers.
“Josephine Njambi, Nicholas Mungai, Joel Kinyanjui and Edwin Njuguna were arrested in the dramatic incident that brought Wendani township to a standstill, albeit for a few minutes,” said DCI in a statement.
