Detectives have ruled out involvement of another person in the death of 21-year-old Margaret Wambui, who died after falling from the rooftop of Altura Apartments in Nairobi’s Upper Hill on Saturday, July 18.
Investigators said their preliminary findings were based on a review of CCTV footage from the 34-storey building as they continue examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to police, the footage showed Wambui entering the apartment building shortly after 8pm before making her way to the rooftop, where she reportedly spent more than 40 minutes taking photographs.
Investigators said the video captured Wambui standing near the edge of the rooftop before she fell, leading them to rule out the possibility of third-party involvement at this stage.
Police also reported that a security guard who had been monitoring the area had briefly left his position to use the washroom around the time of the incident.
A post-mortem examination conducted at the Nairobi Funeral Home confirmed that Wambui died from multiple severe fractures caused by the fall.
The examination established that she died immediately after the impact, according to findings shared with her family.
Wambui’s relatives attended the autopsy together with a pathologist they appointed to observe the procedure as part of their efforts to understand the circumstances surrounding her death.
The family has since appealed to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to complete investigations and provide more information about what happened before the fatal fall.
Maina Gathogo, a relative, said the family would like access to additional details from the investigation, including the CCTV footage capturing Wambui’s final moments.
“There is CCTV footage showing what happened during the incident. We would like to review it as a family so that we can understand exactly what transpired and find closure,” he said.
Wambui’s death has left her family and friends grieving the loss of a young woman who was pursuing a career in the hospitality industry.
Authorities are expected to issue further updates once investigations into the incident are concluded.
