His Excellency General Evariste Ndayishimiye, President of the Republic of Burundi and First Lady Angeline Ndayubaha Ndayishimiye have arrived in Kisumu at the start of the Burundi leader’s two-day State Visit to Kenya.
They were received by Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga, Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo and other senior government officials.
State House spokesperson Kanze Dena said Ndayishimiye will join President Uhuru Kenyatta on his development tour of Kisumu today ahead of the Madaraka Day celebrations tomorrow.
According to Dena, the most important consideration during the President’s visit would be following the health guidelines.
“The President particularly appeals to the passionate residents of Kisumu City to give the best account of themselves by avoiding situations that may compromise national efforts against the Covid-19 pandemic,” the statement from State House reads.
On Saturday, State House spokesperson said Madaraka Day celebrations in Kisumu have put the limelight on Nyanza Region to showcase its investment and business potential to the world.
“We are lucky and glad that we will have a visiting Head of State also gracing the celebrations, giving Nyanza a more presence in East Africa,” she said.
Yesterday, Kenyatta commissioned two key road and water projects in Siaya County.
officially opened the Shs1.6 billion Kodiaga-Wagai-Onyirore/Akala, and Nyangweso-Muhanda road circuit, and the Shs 2.4 billion Siaya-Bondo water supply and sanitation project.
Addressing people who turned up to welcome them at Wagayi trading centre in Gem Constituency, Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga said the fruits of the handshake are manifest throughout the country as peace and harmony continues to prevail while development projects are rolled out.
“All these projects you are seeing us commissioning are as a result of peace and unity, and I wont stop appreciating my brother because of the handshake.
“The fruits of peace is development, the fruits of peace are opportunities and eliminating poverty and lack amongst our people and that’s why we are asking you to support BBI,” the President said.
The Burundi First Lady will join Margaret Kenyatta who will also be involved in several activities.
The First Ladies will visit and inspect other projects while the Presidents will preside over the official programme.
