President Uhuru Kenyatta and his delegation have arrived in Ethiopia for an official function on telecommunications.
The plane carrying the head of state touched down at Bole International Airport on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 and was received by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.
He was accompanied by Cabinet Secretaries; Raychelle Omamo (Foreign Affairs) and Joe Mucheru (ICT).
Reports from the State House revealed that the President would be in Ethiopia for an official visit to witness the issuance of a telecommunications operating license to Safaricom.
The Safaricom led Global Partnership for Ethiopia brought together its parent firms Vodafone and Vodacom, British company CDC Group and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation had submitted a financial bid worth KSh 864 billion.
“With over KSh 864 billion total investment, this will be the single largest FDI into Ethiopia to date. Our desire to take Ethiopia fully digital is on track. I would like to thank all that have taken part in this and for pulling off a very transparent and effective process,” Abiy said.
This comes after Safaricom had beaten the other 12 competitors to emerge among the best six shortlisted by the Ethiopian Communications Authority back in February 2021.
Reports reveal that there were 44.86 million mobile connections in Ethiopia in January 2021. According to the data in January 2021, the mobile connections in the country were equivalent to 38.5% of the total population.
In terms of internet consumption, about 23.96
million people accessed the internet in Ethiopia in January 2021, and this
translated to 2.8 million new users (13%) between 2020 and January 2021.
