Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has expressed confidence that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) will overcome the legal setback in due course.

Addressing a large crowd at Kondele in Kisumu County yesterday, Raila stated that the journey to Canaan was unstoppable expressing optimism that the proponents of the BBI process will soon register a major victory.

“… I told you that the journey to Canaan will face many challenges and that is just one of them,” he asserted.

Raila linked the tribulations facing BBI with biblical teachings to the plight of Job who suffered for a while but overcame, declaring that “nobody can stop reggae.”

“Even in the Bible Ayub was tempted by the devil. We must not lose hope because in the end, we will defeat the enemies of the reforms agenda because nobody can stop reggae, ” he said.

Raila had earlier met ODM leaders from the county and MCAs at a closed-door meeting to calm tensions caused by the developments around BBI and assembled team of lawyers to ensure the appeal to reverse the lower court’s decision will succeed.

He asked Kenyans who support the review process not to be worried about the court decision to stop the initiative.

He spoke ahead of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s visit for Madaraka Day celebrations next week.

This year’s Madaraka Day celebrations will be hosted in Kisumu county and Kenyatta is expected to commission some of the projects in the county.

“We are having high level guests next week and I want you to warmly welcome the president and his entourage,” he appealed.

Despite the surge of infections in the County, the large crowd defied coronavirus restrictions by coming together to be addressed by the former vice president.

Raila was accompanied by Kisumu county leaders led by Governor Anyan’g Nyong’o and his deputy Mathews Owili.

IEBC and BBI secretariats had filed a notice of appeal seeking the High Court to suspend its decision on the judgement it issued on the BBI Bill.

However, Attorney General withdrew his application because he wished to move to the Court of Appeal to seek the the same reliefs.

“…the Hon. Attorney-General hereby withdraws his Notice of Motion
Application dated 14th May, 2021 as he is desirous of invoking the concurrent
jurisdiction of the Court of Appeal to seek similar reliefs,” read the notice.
