ODM Party leader Raila Odinga has sent a message of condolences to the victims of a fuel siphoning gone bad.
“My condolences to the families that have lost loved ones in the Gem, Malanga accident. Quick recovery to those nursing injuries. May God grant you strength to cope”, Raila Odinga wrote on Twitter
The AU High Representative for Infrastructure also cautioned against rushing to accidents sites involving petrol tankers, reminding people
“As we mourn and reflect, I hope against hope that this may be the last time our people are dying out of a scramble for fuel from an overturned tanker; that our people may learn to run away, not towards such scenes in future. The scene of this latest accident is barely 10kms from Sidindi where a similar accident claimed tens of lives in 1998. Let’s learn and live”, he urged
Yesternight, at least 13 people were killed when a petrol tanker overturned and caught fire along the Busia – Kisumu highway.
The truck collided with another vehicle on a highway between Kisumu and Busia late on saturday. Witnesses described the crash scene as a “huge fireball”.
Police say 24 people were in hospital with serious burns and said children were among the injured.
It took two hours for firefighters to reach the scene, near the town of Malanga, about 320km (200 miles) north-west of the capital, Nairobi.
A lorry carrying milk travelling in the opposite direction had collided with the petrol tanker.
Witnesses said several motorcycles were found smouldering close to the crash site.
