Deputy President William Ruto held his first meeting with members of the Kenyan community residing in the diaspora yesterday Sunday, April 25th,2021 via Zoom.
The meeting was attended by about 60 supporters of the deputy president Majorly from the United States and his campaign team in Kenya.

Attendees Included the Deputy President himself, Dr. David Ndii, Dr. Barack Muluka, Eliud Owalo, Hon. Susan Kihika, Hon. Alice Wahome, Dr. Bonnie Khalwale, Aden Duale, Dr. Kisiangani, and Hassan Omar from Kenya and Joseph Lister Nyaringo, New Jersey, Cosmas Choy, North Carolina, Anthony Thuo, Massachusetts, Dr. Muteti, California, and Anwar Sadat, Dallas, among others.
Posting on his Twitter account after the meeting, the deputy president said, “We recognize the critical and huge contribution — both economically and intellectually — that Kenyans in the Diaspora make in the development of our country”.
Many Kenyans in the Diaspora are wondering why Ruto has found the urgency to address the diaspora when he has never found time to talk to them last 8 years as Deputy President.
Diaspora pleas to the national government to ease the burden of traveling to D.C for processing of traveling documents have always fallen on deaf years, therefore, his newfound charm offensive for the diaspora community MUST be treated with the suspicion it deserves.
Ruto’s foray into the diaspora community follows a vacuum left by the ODM leader H.E Raila Amollo Odinga. Failure to champion diaspora interests in BBI sent a strong signal of a lack of interest in the diaspora, and because of this, Raila’s influence in Diaspora has faded.
Ruto aims to project himself as a man who is practical in
his engagement with the diaspora, ready and willing to listen. He tackled quite
well some of the questions asked by
Mr. Nyaringo, touching on the rising external debt whose
effect has a significant impact on the citizens at the bottom of the pyramid,
which he refers to as “hustlers”. Dr. David Ndii explained the bottom-up economic
proposal by the deputy president.
It remains to be seen the impact this meeting will have in convincing the Kenyan diaspora which is very logical and suspicious of Kenya politicians, especially those who have been there and done nothing in promoting their interests.
