Senate’s National Security and Defense Committee has summoned Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to shed light on the country’s preparedness for the 2022 general elections.
The committee, which is chaired by Kisumu Senator Fred Outa, has also invited Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho.
Also to be summoned is Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) director George Kinoti.
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, a member of the committee, said the four are required to tell the country the preparedness of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), security apparatus, and other agencies ahead of next year’s elections.
The summons follows chaos and violence witnessed during recent by-elections in Juja, Bonchari, Matungu, and Kabuchai constituencies as well as Rurii and London wards.
“It’s only 10 months before the 2022 General Election. From all indications, it looks like it is a hot seat,” said Cherargei.
“What measures are we putting in place to ensure that there is no loss of life and no Post-Election Violence (PEV) will be witnessed again? Is the IEBC ready to do its job? Are the security agencies prepared so that they do not make the mistakes that have been made in the previous elections and by-elections,” he added.
