Sonko is seriously ill and needs medical attention – Lawyers

A top aide to Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko says the latter’s health is ‘serious’ and needs urgent medical attention.

Mr Ben Mulwa on Saturday told Mediamax that the county boss is suffering from medical complications, adding that there is need to release him for hospital check up.

Mulwa said he has already reached lawyer Cecil Miller Junior for the request, adding that the attorney is supposed to make an application to the police.

Sonko is currently held at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission police cells, and is expected to remain there until Monday.

However, Mulwa says the complication cannot allow him to remain in cells, arguing that he has a right to seek medical attention.

The county boss was arrested on Friday in Voi, before he was bungled to a waiting helicopter which ferried him to Nairobi.

Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji had on Friday morning issued an arrest order, arguing that his team has evidence of massive corruption at City Hall.

Police on Saturday also said they will charge Sonko with assault charges, claiming he punched a senior officer while resisting arrest.

In a statement after his arrest, Sonko accused EACC of witch-hunt, adding that he’s ready to face his accusers in court.

“I want to confidently state from the onset that I am more than ready for the lawful course that will help us know the truth. As your leader, and an elected governor, l believe in total accountability, especially when it comes to management of public resources,” Sonko’s statement read in part.

Among others, Haji said, Sonko participated in irregular procurement of services worth Sh357 million at City Hall.
