Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Hajji has ordered for immediate arrest and prosecution of Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko over corruption allegations.
In a shaky voice, Hajji said that he has sufficient to warrant the prosecution of and his senior accomplices at the City Hall. The order follows the review of the investigation files handed to the DPP by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC).
Sonko is accused of unlawful acquisition of public property, crimes of conflict of interests that rose from receiving money from the county while serving as the governor and other economic related crimes.
In October EACC launched investigations on suspected procurement irregularities and payment of sh 196 million in the ongoing refurbishing of Dandora Stadium.
The investigations follow recommendation by the Public Procurement Regulatory that reviewed the skewed tendering process that earned the governor millions of kick backs.
His Kiambu counterpart Ferdinand Waituti who is also facing corruption charges and is under investigations has been barred from accessing his office. His deputy Nyoro has been handed the responsibility to run the county affairs in an acting capacity.
Controversial Sonko has been running the county of Nairobi without the deputy since early 2018. In case Sonko is barred from accessing his City Hall office to give room investigations, the speaker of the county assembly of Nairobi will assume the governor position in an acting capacity.
In his address to the press on Friday, Hajji said that the investigations have been challenging following numerous attempts by the accused to obstruct investigations by employing intimidation tactics.
He also accused Sonko accomplices of placing their selfish interests before the great people of Nairobi.
Investigations have unearthed numerous instances of criminal conduct and blatant disregard of the law by the governor.
Elachi is a Sonko sycophant who didn’t shy from thanking the governor for her return to the speaker position after she was ousted by MCAs opposed to the governor.
But people change, Nyoro has since ‘graduated’ from being a Waititu sycophant after ‘tasting’ the county boss position.
