The use of modern contraceptive methods among all women of reproductive age has increased to 46% in 2020, up from 38% in 2014, a new survey shows.
Kericho County has recorded 42% of the pregnancies as unintended in 2020.
Survey and findings released Friday collected information from 834 women aged between 15-49 years in the County.
The survey was conducted by Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA) — a
Consortium that generates surveys monitoring key health indicators in Kenya since
2014.
The survey also revealed an increase in the use of long acting methods to 17%
in 2020 up from 12% in 2019.
Decisions on whether to use family planning method or not among partners measured during the survey reported that 58% of the respondents using FP agreed that it was a joint decision where as 85% women who were not using FP said that it was mainly
their decision.
Findings further revealed an increase in demand satisfied by modern methods at 75% up from 65% in 2014.
“Increase in demand has been realized through joint efforts between county and
partners like The Challenge Initiative (TCI) who have supported outreaches to the
communities. We have also trained staff in long term methods and counseled clients
on the method mix such that they are able to choose what they need within reach.”
Survey & findings also showed that the county made positive progress in method
availability within the in the past year with over 70% of the facilities not experiencing stock outs for the pills, injectable and male condoms in the last three months.
“The progress in the supply of FP commodities in the facilities was realized when the county was able to procure and order for commodities from KEMSA with support from Transforming Health Systems (THS) – World Bank. The staff were also trained in forecasting and quantification thereby ensuring that there is continued supply of the commodities in the facilities” said Dr. Betty Langat.
“The platform has been able to generate data over time that can support the county
to make informed decisions and implement targeted interventions” said Mary Thiongo – PMA, Senior Technical Advisor in Kenya.
