The Kenyan government is not paying health workers, today Garissa health workers have downed their tools and joined other counties like VIhiga who have opted to take to the streets over delayed salaries.
A spot check by KenyaBulletin has established patients were being turned away due to the absence of medics to attend to them at the health centres and dispensaries as well in the counties.
While other Counties health workers could not stage protest demonstrations in the public out of respect for the current health guidelines, Garissa health workers decided to not obey the social distancing directives and marched to the streets.
More than 800 nurses from Homabay County have issued a two days strike notice because of delayed salary payment and shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). About 60 doctors have also complained of a lack of money after the government failed to pay them.
Machakos health workers have also threatened to strike on Monday if the county government will not have paid their March salaries. In a press statement, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union branch secretary in Lower Eastern Charles Okumu said they were concerned about difficult conditions doctors had been subjected to during the COVID-19 pandemic.
