Weatherman warns of heavy rains as COVID-19 continues to ravage

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned to brace themselves for heavy rains expected to pound throughout the week.  Some areas have already reported massive destruction from landslides and floods that have been caused by heavy rainfall.

Flash floods and mudslides have been reported at Chesegon market that is located at the border of West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet counties. The mudslides that triggered by heavy rainfall have so far claimed four lives and 23 people have been reported missing.

MET: It will Pound Heavy on Mashujaa Day, brace yourselves

Chesegon area is currently inaccessible as West Pokot remains one of the areas that has been seriously affected by heavy rainfall. In November and December last year, more than 40 people lost their lives from massive landslides that hit the area.

Weatherman is warning of heavy rains as the country grapples to curb the spread of coronavirus that has brought nearly everything to a still. Businesses and schools are shut as the government continues to advise people work from home.

The pandemic has exposed the lack of preparedness in health facilities under the county governments to handle emergencies.

In Kericho County three people including two minors have lost their lives to mudslides that hit at least three wards in Kipkelion West Constituency. In Kunyak, Chilchila and Kamasian areas, people have been displaced and their houses destroyed following heavy rains that have been hitting the area for a week now.

Officials from Kenya Red Cross are no scanning Kapkese, Kamiwa, Rwandet, Timbilil and Kipteden areas to determine the extent of the damages.

In Busia County many families have been displaced in areas in Budalangi Constituency after they were forced to evacuate their homes and move to raised grounds after they were affected by overflow of water from River Nzoia. Residents say the floods have washed away their food and animals.

KMD has listed areas that are likely to be affected by floods as they urge the concerned to seek shelter in higher grounds. Kwale, Kilifi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Mombasa, Lamu, Tana-River, Taita Taveta, Nairobi, Nyeri, Kiambu, Narok, Murang’a, Nyandarua and Embu among other counties most likely to be hit hard.
