Constitution of Kenya (BBI Amendment) Bill, 2020 will be introduced at the National Assembly on Thursday.
Speaker Justin Muturi directed that the Bill be introduced in the House for its First Reading on March 4, 2021. The Clerk of the National Assembly has been directed to urgently obtains sufficient copies of the Bill.
The copies are to be in the form that the Bill was presented to the 47 county assemblies by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to enable introduction into the House as directed.
So far, 42 counties have passed the BBI Bill and three (Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi and Baringo) have rejected it. Uasin Gishu and Mandera county assemblies are the only two that have not debated the Bill.
The constitutional threshold of at least 24 assemblies was surpassed last week.
On February 25, President Uhuru Kenyatta hosted a section of political party leaders at State House, Nairobi where they issued a joint statement expressing their gratitude to the County Assemblies that supported the BBI Bill.
The leaders included Raila Odinga (ODM), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Musalia Mudavadi (ANC), Gideon Moi (KANU), Charity Ngilu (Narc) and Moses Wetangula (Ford Kenya).
