Two wanted gangsters were shot dead by
DCI last night and a firearm was recovered, as detectives intensify the war against criminal gangs in the city.
The thugs were accosted by DCI detectives in the nick of time as they finalized their plans to stage attacks within Embakasi, throwing their evil plans into disarray. L
ike cornered rats, the thugs who were initially three scattered into different directions shooting at the detectives frenziedly.
But our men responded with precision, fatally wounding two of them on the spot as the third miscreant staged a daring escape into Mukuru kwa Njenga settlements. Determined to arrest him, detectives gave chase but the thug was lucky to jump into a sewer infested with human waste, his body riddled with gunshot injuries.
Following the operation, DCI
detectives recovered an Austrian-made glock pistol and 29 live rounds of 9 mm callibre, from one of the fallen gangsters. After preliminary ballistic tests, it was established that the same firearm had been used to commit various robberies in the city, including the cold-blooded murder of one Monica Katee, who was shot five times at
Mukuru kwa Njenga, four days ago.
The thugs were also linked to the series of robberies that have been targeting mobile money lending outlets within Nairobi’s East-lands suburbs, with one of them named Kevin Maruga, being positively identified by some of the victims.
The 11pm operation was led by detectives drawn from different specialized detachments, led by Nairobi’s Operations Branch & Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (
CRIB). They were augmented by sleuths from Buru Buru and
Embakasi police divisions.
In 1926, the Criminal Intelligence Unit was established with the sole responsibility of collecting, tabulating and recording the history and data on criminals, undesirable and suspicious persons. It later took on board the Intelligence, Crime, Passport and Immigration sections, in addition to the Fingerprint section which had been in existence since 1909.
In 1935 the C.I.D moved into new offices at the Law Courts where the current Supreme Courts are now situated from the location of the Serena Hotel. To enhance its capacity of crime investigation, the C.I.D. Training School was established in 1957.
In 1975 the Department moved to Kilimani area Headquarters along Valley Road. In the year 2003 the Department moved to its present premises at Mazingira Complex off Kiambu Road.
The promulgation of the constitution in 2010 set stage for the establishment of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. This was actualised in the enactment of the National Police Service Act of 2011. Part V, Section 28 and 35 of the Act outlines the Directorate’s mandate as provided for under Article 247 of the constitution.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is established under the National Police Service Act, 2011. It is part of the larger National Police Service; the other organs being the Administration Police Service and Kenya Police Service.
