9 UoN staff test positive for COVID-19

Nine more University of Nairobi staff tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19). Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Kiama announced on Friday, July 24.

This brings the total tally of cases recorded at UoN to 14.

Out of the 14, 10 are members of staff and the other four are their dependents.

Three active members of staff and one retired staff passed away with fatalities at the institution tallying at four.

“It is a difficult period for our country and the UoN community. I convey my condolences to the affected families and pray to the almighty God to give them comfort and strength to overcome the pain and loss.

“I also wish a quick recovery to all those who have tested positive. These are not mere statistics,” Kiama stated.

On Wednesday, July 15, Kiama postponed reopening the university after Covid-19 deaths were recorded.

The institution was scheduled to resume classes in September 2020.

The VC noted that the Ministry of Health indicated the virus cases will peak in November 2020.

However, virtual graduation will go as planned, with September 25 scheduled as graduation date for PhDs, Masters, Bachelors, Diplomas and fellowships students.

Kiama added that continuing students will commence the new academic year virtually in September after the Senate announces new dates.
