Battle for numbers shifts to Senate, National Assembly

The battle to control the two houses is already pointing to be a tough balance for the incoming Head of State as Kenyans continue to wait for the presidential results since casting their votes on August 9.

The winner is looking forward to control the National Assembly, the Senate and the Council of Governors which will be Key to either Deputy President Dr. William Ruto or Azimio’s Raila Odinga who are the top contenders.

Dr. Ruto is already set to control the Senate after his UDA party bagged 24 senatorial seats across the country in the just concluded election and still has a room for many nomanination slots.

Azimio La Umoja only has 23 senators after UDA bagged a majority of seats from President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Mt Kenya backyard and Rift Valley which is DP’s political bastion.

Dr Ruto has also won senatorial seats from Kakamega, Marsabit and Tana River Counties.

“It is now official; Kenya Kwanza controls the Senate. Thank you Kenyans for the trust,” Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen wrote on his Twitter handle.

Kenya Kwanza Alliance led by Dr. Ruto had exuded confidence even before the elections that they will control both the National Assembly and the Senate whether they clinch presidency or not.

UDA had 261 National Assembly aspirants out of 290 constituencies countrywide, complemented by addition of candidates from affiliate parties in the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

Musalia Mudavadi’s Amani National Congress (ANC) and Moses Wetang’ula’s Ford Kenya respectively fielded 71 and 34 candidates for National Assembly.

UDA also sponsored 38 candidates for the senate and 43 candidates for county Woman Rep positions.

But by Friday, Kenya Kwanza had won 147 National Assembly seats while Azimio was still trailing at 130 as official results for various seats continue to trickle in.

Political experts are already arguing that the numbers of elected leaders are proof that Kenya Kwanza has all it takes to clincly the presidency whose tally is still underway.
