The Ministry of Health today announced that coronavirus cases in Kenyan has risen to 208 since the first patient was diagnosed with the disease in March 2020.
There have been 40 recoveries, 9 deaths.
The figure is rising slowly but not as prophets of doom had envisioned.
However, there’s a grey area in the reporting. While western world numbers are higher because of other factors such as Influenza season, lifestyle and weak public health systems, the numbers in Africa, particularly Kenya might be higher.
One thing this virus has shown us is that it is very unpredictable even as the mild cases are always more than the critical ones.
Take for example, some people reported having gotten well a few days after having the coronavirus-like symptoms.
This brings me to my point.
In Kenya, as with all aristocratic and overly dehumanising states (also with high capitalism), many people would rather hide than go to the hospital or a quarantine centre.
This problem is exacerbated by the history of lying by the state. Such as the case of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), who hid their travel history so as to not go int the mandatory 14 days quarantine. The result is that over 20 staff are now in quarantine. One is dead. This is after the whistleblower, blogger Cyprian Nyakundi was arrested, detained and released on an exorbitant fine of Sh200,000. (see how they treat their jobless youths)
Now, the editor of Kenyanbulletin.com received information that a driver for the United Nations Organisation in the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation agency) might have died of coronavirus.
The WhatsApp message seen by KenyanBulletin.com says just like the KRA and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) cases, the matter has been hidden and has not been announced by the government.
Social activists always remind us that the Kenyan Government often does things to please the outside world most directly, their Western Masters. It isn’t a secret that the death has been hidden so as not to ‘shake up’ the UN Systems.
It is reported that the FAO driver, a Mr Kevin died after coming from Mandera County.
“He was a driver for FAO. He was delivering food to Mandera. He came back to Nairobi on good Friday and developed flu-like symptoms. He went to his house in Uthiru and told his wife he wasn’t feeling well so he self-isolated in the bedroom. On Saturday he developed a cough and was planning to go to the hospital. The next day, the wife found him dead. The family is looking for certification so that they can take him to Kakamega for burial”, stated the source.
She added, “I have lost two friends, I think the government is underreporting. Another friend died when the KQ pilot Captain died, but the CS (Mutahi Kagwe) didn’t announce that”.
