Yesterday, the county government of Mandera revealed that 32 people who travelled from Nairobi last week have managed to disappear from a quarantine facility in Elwak town under unclear circumstances.
Well, it is no longer unclear as residents claim police were involved.

I’m writing to you from Mandera county specifically Mandera south Elwak there is this deputy OCPD known as Hamdi Mohammoud his work number is this 215093 he took bribe and released 32 people who are quarantined at Elwak he took 5000 from each person in makkah bus that has travelled from Nairobi to Mandera risking our lives….those people who were quarantined before he realised them some of them have high fevers. Even as reported on the Daily Nation, county official have also accused the police of colluding with the passengers who were in forced quarantine after they were reported to have sneaked out of Nairobi on Wednesday last week.
A letter whose contents in part were published by the Daily Nation stated “I write to register our displeasure with the manner in which 32 people out of 66 passengers disappeared from quarantine facilities under the watch of police officers. It appears a few elements within the security system are yet to understand the seriousness of this campaign against coronavirus.”
The county government has accused the Makka bus company of continuing to defy directives and is considering involving the intervention of National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
This comes even as authorities raised concern over increasing positive cases in rural counties, among them Mandera, which as of Monday had six confirmed cases.
Confirmed cases of coronavirus now stands at 226; 63 cases have been closed, meaning 53 recoveries and 10 deaths
A blame game between the DCC and the police is ongoing.
