Court saves semi-literate Nairobi Governor Sakaja from impeachment

Governor aspirants do not need a university degree to be eligible, the High Court declared on Friday.

In the ruling which was delivered by Justice Anthony Mrima; elected Nairobi County governor Johnson Sakaja and his Turkana counterpart Jeremiah Lomorukai have been let off the hook.

The constitution required that anyone running for governor seat must have a degree certificate.

The requirement for a degree was introduced through an amendment of the Election Laws (Amendment) Act of 2017.

Implementation of the legal provision was postponed in the 2017 polls to the 2022 General Election.

Sakaja clearly forged his Team University degree after having been exposed for not finishing his degree in actuarial science at the University of Nairobi.

It was an egg-in-the-face moment for Sakaja who had been telling every interviewer, Tom Dick and Harry that he has a degree.

But with the requirement of a degree declared unconstitutional, Sakaja has easily been let off the hook.

The Kenya Kwanza coalition governor has minority MCAs in the Nairobi County Government.

The KEMSA scandal beneficiary was not going to last more than a year.
