Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko was on Tuesday, November 5, caught on camera assaulting a journalist at the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) headquarters.
Together with his bodyguards, the governor was seen slapping the journalist Collins Kweyu at the back of his head, as he pulled him behind and went through the Integrity Center gate.
Nairobi County Director of Communications Jacob Elkana, however, refuted claims that the governor had assaulted the journalist.
“No, those are anti-riot police officers,” he responded.
The governor’s supporters had stormed EACC headquarters to protest against the agency after it summoned the Nairobi governor.
Many of them were boda boda riders and met the full wrath of anti-riot police officers who were at the scene.
On Monday, November 4, Sonko claimed that an EACC official was out to frustrate him due to his sustained fight against land grabbing in Nairobi.
On the same day, the governor also bought full-page ad space on The Standard to lament over how EACC Director of Investigations, Abdi Mohamud had allegedly misused his office to cover-up crimes.
The governor stated that he feared for his life upon meeting the EACC officials. However, he asserted that he would honour their summon.
