Karen Nyamu has addressed the controversy surrounding her recent remarks in Parliament about a female student, saying she regrets the comments and does not understand why she said them.
Speaking during a public event, Nyamu admitted that her remarks sparked criticism online and insisted that many people misunderstood her words after clips from the debate circulated on social media.
The nominated senator said she is human and capable of making mistakes like everyone else.
“Do you know me for good or bad? Sometimes a small bad side appears because we are all human. People should not pretend they are angels,” Nyamu said.
She also blamed “the devil” for influencing her controversial statement, adding that she never intended to offend anyone.
The remarks came days after Kenyans criticised the senator over comments many people considered inappropriate and insensitive toward a female student. The controversy quickly triggered debate online, with critics demanding an apology from the lawmaker.
Following the backlash, Nyamu later apologised in the Senate and acknowledged that her comments upset many Kenyans.
The controversy once again placed the outspoken senator at the centre of online debate, with supporters defending her honesty while critics accused her of repeatedly making controversial public statements.
Some social media users accepted her apology and called on Kenyans to move on, while others argued that leaders should choose their words carefully, especially when discussing young people and sensitive issues.
Karen Nyamu remains one of Kenya’s most talked-about politicians because of her outspoken personality and frequent social media engagements.
