MPs move to quell tensions between TSC and Unions

The National Assembly Committee on Education on monday had discussions with and the Teachers Service Commission, Kenya National Union of Teachers ( KNUT ) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) to quell the bad blood between the entities.

There has been a push and pull relationship between the commission and the unions, in many cases Knut which has resulted to many court cases.
TSC’s Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia whose term was recently renewed under unclear circumstances in her submissions before the committee said that KNUT had filed a number of suits against the commission that employs teachers.

“There are a number of suits that have been filed by the Kenya National Union of Teachers against the TSC,” Macharia said.

In 2017, Knut was embroiled in a serious battle with TSC and took the commission to court over transfer of institutional administrators in 2017 in line with implementation of the CBA.

Knut, led by Nominated Mp Wilson Sossion also challenged the commission’s decision to issue it with a notice to revoke TSC/Knut Recognition Agreement of 1968,  matter that is still pending in court.

TSC again filed another case in December 2018 against Knut to forestall an industrial action, which was scheduled to commence on January 2, 2019. The union had organised a  strike to coincide with the opening of schools for the 2019 academic calendar.

Knut secretary general Wilson Sossion, however blamed the commission for the many  suits as he accused Macharia of acting in bad faith.

Early last month reports did rounds in a section of the media that KNUT Secretary General Hon. Sossion had gone to court to challenged the extension of Macharia’s term at the help of TSC which raised many eyebrows.

Knut has dismissed reports it is behind a lawsuit challenging the reappointment  of Macharia a statement saying,  “The union has not filed a petition in any court opposing reappointment of Macharia to serve the commission for another term.”
