Muslim leaders have rejected the rush to amend the constitution through the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) arguing that the Raila Odinga led initiative will not bring any reforms.
The clerics held a presser in Nairobi on Sunday when they poked holes into the BBI report, terming it a document that will the country back to the dark days as it will weaken the gains made since 2010.
The leaders called handshake partners President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga to call off the process and focus on serious issues like fighting Covid-19 that is claiming lives and ravaging the economy.
“BBI will create an imperial president. It will weaken the checks and balances that have been put in place to check the executive,” Supkem Chairman Naado said.
Hassan Ole Naado read the statement on behalf of the Muslim leaders who have taken a stand similar to that of the Catholic bishops who raised questions on the intentions of the unpopular report.
Catholic bishops raised concerns about the proposals of the BBI report that is being rushed to a referendum before a proper civic education as the country grapples with the impact of Covid-19 pandemic.
The bishops argued that implementation of the proposals will result into chaos in government.
Like the Muslim Clerics, the bishops also accused the report of plotting to create an imperial president and to turn the police service into machinery that can be used by those in power to oppress the opposition and critics.
The timing of the document has also been faulted by both Muslim and Catholic bishops as wrong and inappropriate.
