Azimio la Umoja One Kenya leader Raila Odinga on Sunday, February 26, took the anti-President William Ruto protests to Trans Nzoia county.
However, the county’s governor George Natembeya, who was elected on the Azimio-affiliated Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) ticket, was conspicuously missing.
In the event, Natembeya’s deputy Philomena Kapkoy also failed to attend, forcing Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi to play host.
Among the leaders who accompanied Raila include his then-running mate Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, George Wajackoyah, Eugene Wamalwa, Wycliffe Oparanya, Ledama Olekina, Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino.
The anti-government protest rally began at Christ the King Catholic Church- Mitume before proceeding for a public rally at the Kitale town center
Weighing in on Natembeya’s absence, Ledama said the county boss should stop begging for development from the government, saying it is guaranteed in the law.
“My brother Natembeya, we have been with you to Narok and we worked together to finish insecurity there, but with this habit of always travelling, you have forgotten that you’re a governor. Now you are begging for development from this Kenya Kwanza. Trans Nzoia residents are waiting for you to implement what you promised them during the campaigns,” said Ledama.
On his part, Natembeya said he will continue to work with Ruto’s administration for the sake of development.
The former Rift Valley regional commissioner argued that after the Supreme Court verdict, the opposition exhausted all the available options constitutionally to dispute an election.
“For us, we need to focus on development, support the government, and support the President. I am not going to defect, I am going to support the President, the government,” said Natembeya.
