Raila Boxed Out? 62 Out Of 85 MCAs Approve Mike Sonko’s Impeachment. Things are not going well for the embattled city governor, or as I call him, the Well dressed governor who has no clue how to Address what is facing the people. Panic is chopping Mike Sonko’s camp as 62 MCAs out of 85 MCA’s append their signatures to a motion calling for his impeachment.

This comes a few days after AU’s special envoy and Opposition chief Raila Odinga had directed Nairobi -MCAs not to impeach troubled governor Mike Sonko. Raila warned ODM MCAs not to participate in the looming impeachment of Sonko.

The party’s Nairobi branch chairman George Aladwa in an official communication to the MCAs said he had been directed by Raila to inform that the party was not supporting the impeachment of Sonko.

Some of the reasons tabled include gross violation of the Constitution, lack of deputy and inability to control debt. Minority Whip and Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok who moved the motion also cited incompetence and an inability to lead. Sonko has also been accused of gross misconduct and bringing the office of the governor to disgrace.

The MCA was kicked out by Speaker Beatrice Elachi, amid shouts of “point of order” as Imwatok read out the motion, outlining grounds for Sonko’s impeachment.

“This will not be a house of shouting. It will be a house where we use the rule of law. There will be no point of order as he issues a point of order,” Speaker Elachi remarked when ordering MCAs to let Imwatok finish reading his motion.

The motion was messy as we highlighted here.

Has Raila’s powers to cleanse and save Mike Sonko being undermined buy his BBI handshake buddy Uhuru Kenyatta?

Sonko might be heading the Waititu way. The Senate voted for the removal of Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu after finding him guilty of three charges which were tabled before it by Kiambu County Assembly. Waititu became the first governor to be found guilty by the Senate.

Senate Speaker Lusaka stated the three main charges namely; Gross misconduct, abuse of office and engaging in corruption.

First charge: “That Senate resolves to remove from office Governor Waititu for gross violation of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, the County Governments Act, 2012, the Public Finance Management Act, 2012 and the Public Procurement and Disposal Act, 2005.”

Second charge:  “That Senate resolves to remove from office Governor Waititu for crimes under the National Law.”

Third charge: “That Senate resolves to remove from office Governor Waititu for Abuse of office and gross misconduct.

In the first charge, 27 Senators voted for his removal against 10 who objected. The number grew as one member shifted to support the motion for the second and third charges making it 28 for those supporting and 11 for those objecting.

Results released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission in 2017 revealed that Jubilee bagged 45 seats against National Super Alliance’s (NASA) 39. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party got 38 seats while Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper party got one seat.

“I am sure the MCAs will give me unequivocal support in passing policies to fix the city and restore it to its former glory,” said Sonko.

In 2017, it was thought that then Governor-elect Mike Sonko would have an easy time implementing policies compared to when the previous regime had the majority. In 2013, the Opposition’s Coalition of Reforms and Democracy (CORD) won the majority of seats in the assembly with 43 MCAs against Jubilee’s 42.
