The 2022 campaigns in Kitui county will be interesting tug-of-war. Look at the Kitui county senatorial campaigns for instance. Wilfred Nyamu candidature has reduced the whole campaign and senatorial qualification into a professional onslaught. Nyamu, a Nairobi based advocate, started the “professional” debate by going around claiming that for one to be effective in the senate one has to be a lawyer. He drops several names of senators who are all lawyers and whom he thinks it is their law background that makes them allegedly “tick” in the senate debate. He argues that most of the debate in the house is mostly based on law and therefore it would be an added advantage for a legislator to be a lawyer. Most people however do not agree with this thinking. “This is not true. Former senator David Musila is not a lawyer and he did quite well. Current senator Enoch Wambua is a journalist and he has done Kitui people proud.

Enoch Wambua

He is a true servant leader in both inside and outside the house,” Kamwatu, the chairman of Mwingi/Migwani Probox matatu operators said Different candidates rebuke this in all their campaign platforms. In fact it now seems that Nyamu has opened a can of worms for himself. Julius Mutukaa who is also gunning for the Kitui county senatorial slot laughed off Nyamu’s thinking. Mutukaa, who is a teacher, took it personal and asked Nyamu what he has done with his profession as a lawyer to uplift lives of Kitui county residents. “Let him name one individual or group of people he has defended in the court of law from Kitui county. None. In fact, we have approached him more than once and he either refused than once and he either refused or charged us exorbitantly so much so that we cannot afford the fee. We had to engage John Khaminwa who considered our welfare and represented us in court. Now that he wants the same people he has refused to assist, he cannot come around selling himself as a lawyer,” Mutukaa said.

Mutukaa says that Nyamu has fashioned himself as a defender of corrupt governors. “We only hear him in court defending impeached governors most of whom are corrupt. As far as I know, senators are supposed to oversight governors and their counties and not to go to bed with the same governors,” Mutukaa said. Most opinion leaders in Kitui county, however, dismiss “the lawyer senator” debate as a waste of time. Nzeluni/Katalwa ward MCA Paul Mwangangi singles out Senator Wambua as example of a non-lawyer senator who has “tremendously performed in the house so far”. “Look at his record. He stood firm and secured Sh1.8 billion additional funds to Kitui county kitty. He brought a private bill to the senate, defended and lobbied fellow legislators until they passed that ndengu (green gram) be recognised as a cash crop,” he said. He also says that Wambua’s loyalty to Kalonzo Musyoka is a plus. “Those are all qualities of an effective representative of the people. We are not after people’s profession. We are after a leader,” Mutukaa added
