Shock as Kisumu NGO staff murdered body dumped in dam

Joseph Onyango, who was fondly referred to by friends as Josmob. Friends say he was a happy soul. His body was found dumped in Kameta Dam after a night out with friend Leonard Akwany

Joseph ‘Josmob’ Onyango is a hardworking man who is very gifted in writing proposals for Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) funding. He and his co-partner in the firm that they started worked well, their different skills matched to make the organization successful.

Leonard ‘Leo’ Akwany was the donor-darling who complemented Joseph’s impeccable proposal write skills.

Soon, they won a Sh10 million project and that’s when things started going south.

Joseph was fired.

Unexplained wealth

Since winning the Sh10 million contract, the life of Leo changed drastically, he constructed a house and also owned other assets in and around Nyalenda estate in Kisumu. He like became a rich man overnight.

On the other hand, Joseph’s life became harder, he had toiled under Leo and now out in the cold, he had to surmount his writing skills to see if he can make it in the crowded Nyanza NGO world.

Not giving up, he founded his own organization and set sail. In the rough and tumultuous life of a social workers intending to change the circumstances of his community and family, he looked like he had strike gold as donors started warming up to him.

He possessed the two important attributes that is needed to succeed, being a good writer, he only needed good networks in the donor community to succeed.

The call and disappearance

On Tuesday 25th August 2020, Joseph is alleged to have got a call from his former boss Leo.

Leo is said to have invited him to a birthday party for his wife and Joseph being of good heart, obliged and went to attend the night party.

On Wednesday, 26th August 2020, Leo is said to have walked into Kondele police station and reported Joseph missing.

A day later, a body of a man was retrieved from the Kameta dam. he had a deep cut at the back of his head, seemingly from a Panga. He was dead it appears from that one blow to the head.

Police immediately arrested a watchman of Maasai descent who was guarding the adjacent building, but uproar from people make them to let him go.

Witnesses place Leo at the scene of the murder. It is alleged that Leo was seen in the company of another man on the morning of Tuesday 25th August 2020.

A trail of blood, as witnessed and spoken by those who were on the watchman’s side led to the house of the murder suspect, who is alleged to be Leo.

The family is crying for justice fearing that the postmortem might be interfered with.

Six days after the murder, police are yet arrest anyone. They are yet to question the suspects which include all the people that attended the party at Leonard Okwany’s house.
