In the face of the recent coded signals that have been witnessed for a while now between Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya and deputy president William Ruto, Vihiga governor Wilbur Ottichillo has now come out to declare that the region remains firm and solid in its position.

While appreciating the fact that Oparanya is a final term governor, the Vihiga head said that it is not only understandable but also his right to forge new alliances that he felt served his purpose. Nevertheless, he went on to add that despite this, out of the four counties of Western proper, Busia, Kakamega and Vihiga continued to have ODM governors.

Asked to comment on the fact that Oparanya appeared to be pressuring the party leader to back him, Otichillo downplayed this, saying that in a contest where one is facing a clear favourite, it was only smart politics to solicit the support of such a front-runner.

Governor Otichillo was speaking yesterday on K24 on the station’s Sunday interview hosted by Daniel Kituu.
On the issue of BBI, Governor Otichillo exuded confidence, asserting that not only would the referendum happen before August, but that once it did, the region would vote overwhelmingly to adopt the changes proposed in the document.

And although widely expected, the governor finally made it official that he would be seeking a second and final term in office as governor. He expressed optimism saying that considering the work he has done in the social welfare and health sector, he favoured his chances.

On the topic of health, the governor found himself struggling to explain why the county government had delayed the salaries of health practitioners. He said that there had been overemployment of staff in the sector, which led to a mismatch between staff and the budget, but that the issue was being handled.
