WhatsApp has rolled out a new browser-based calling feature that allows users to make and receive audio and video calls directly through WhatsApp Web without downloading the desktop application.
The latest update enables users to access one-on-one and group calls through supported web browsers while maintaining key features available on other linked devices.
The move addresses a long-standing limitation faced by users who rely on WhatsApp Web through shared computers, workplace devices or systems where installing applications is restricted.
With the new browser calling capability, users can now answer or initiate calls from a browser for a more seamless communication experience without requiring the standalone WhatsApp desktop app.
WhatsApp said the web version will support features such as screen sharing, call reactions and a dedicated section for viewing call history and accessing favourite contacts.
The company added that "calls made through browsers" will remain protected by end-to-end encryption, will not have time limits and will be available at no additional cost.
The update also introduces a call transfer feature that allows users to move an ongoing group call between their smartphone, desktop application and web browser without ending the conversation.
WhatsApp said the new changes are designed to expand calling flexibility across different devices while maintaining the platform’s existing privacy and security protections.
The features are being introduced gradually and will be made available to users globally in the coming weeks.
In addition to browser calling, WhatsApp has introduced a "Waiting Room" feature that allows call hosts to approve participants before they join group calls created through a call link.
The platform has also launched "QuickHD", a feature that provides high-definition video quality from the beginning of a call, improving the overall video communication experience.
Another addition is a "noise suppression tool" that helps reduce background sounds and improve voice clarity, especially when users are making calls in busy environments. The feature can be managed through the in-call settings menu.
The latest updates mark a major expansion of WhatsApp’s calling ecosystem, giving users more flexibility when communicating across phones, desktops and web browsers.
