Politician Stanley Livondo has moved to court seeking to block Deputy President William Ruto from contesting for the Presidency in 2022.
The controversial businessman cum politician now wants the Attorney General to declare that both the President and his Deputy are not eligible to contest when that time comes.
He wants the court to declare that both Articles 130 (1), 131 (1) (b) and 148 (6)(a) are combined during interpretation so that the second in command forgets about the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“The Petitioner brings this petition for an interpretation of the provisions….of the Constitution with regards to qualifications and disqualifications of persons intending to vie as a presidential candidate,” read part of the documents presented to the court.
He argued that both Ruto and Uhuru have been working as a single entity. He told the court that the two needs to go home together after the end of Uhuru’s tenure in office.
The move comes after it emerged that Uhuru wants to use the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) to remain in office. Ruto has, however, insisted that the head of state has no intentions to stay in office even after he completes his tenure in office as perceived.
He made the remarks during the burial of Martha Kirigo, the mother to Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua.
“For clarity, the party has no scheme or plan to change the constitution with the intent to take Kenya back to the dark days to have leadership concentrated in one corner of this country,” he said.
