Gospel singer Rachel Wandeto, who recently went viral after tattooing President William Ruto’s image on her body, has died while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital following a brutal attack in Mwiki, Kasarani.

Wandeto suffered severe burn injuries after unknown attackers allegedly poured petrol on her and set her on fire on May 16, 2026. Doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital fought to save her life for several days, but she later succumbed to the injuries.

The singer attracted nationwide attention weeks earlier after photos and videos of her tattoos, which included President Ruto’s portrait and political slogans linked to his administration, spread across social media. The tattoos sparked mixed reactions online, with some Kenyans praising her loyalty while others criticised the move.

According to preliminary police investigations, the attackers confronted Wandeto over claims that she had received money and favours because of her public support for President Ruto. Reports indicate the suspects demanded that she share the alleged money, but when she denied receiving anything, they attacked her before fleeing the scene.

Police have launched investigations into the incident, although authorities had not announced any arrests by Monday.

The attack and her death have sparked outrage across the country, with leaders, activists, and members of the public condemning the violence and calling for justice.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen visited Wandeto while she was in the hospital and condemned the attack, saying no Kenyan should face violence because of political beliefs or personal opinions.

The incident has also reignited debate over political intolerance, online misinformation, and growing hostility linked to political divisions in the country.

Residents in Kasarani and human rights groups have now urged security agencies to speed up investigations and improve security in informal settlements, warning that rising political tension could expose more innocent people to violence.
