The man who died of Covid-19 in Bomet County was assisted by a police officer to ‘pass’ security checks along the highway, KB has established.
The 55-year-old man managed to travel from Nairobi to Longisa Hospital in Bomet County because a police officer helped him to beat the Government restrictions laid to stem the spread of the virus.
The police officer based at Lang’ata Police Station who is related to the deceased is now put under quarantine at Mbagathi Hospital.
On Friday, Bomet County Commissioner Geoffrey Omoding dismissed claims that the man traveled in a police car.
“The officer who transported the deceased was dressed in police uniform and staff at the hospital thought he was using our car that was parked outside after dropping a victim of an accident,” Omoding said.
“The officer used a letter from the clinic claiming he was referring a sick person to a hospital in Bomet,” said Omonding.
Deeper investigations are still underway and disciplinary action will be taken against the officer.
Elsewhere, a Kenyan soldier suspected to have contracted coronavirus who travelled from Mombasa has been put in isolation after falling ill at his Ndanai home in Sotik.
Bomet Executive for health Joseph Sitonik said his samples had been taken to Kemri to ascertain the truth after the KDF officer was rushed to Ndanai Sub-county Hospital with Covid-19 like symptoms.
“We isolated the soldier who admitted to have travelled from Mombasa to Nairobi and Bomet. We are waiting for the results today,” said Sitonik.
Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok has spoken strongly against officers who are misusing their privileges for personal benefits.
“We are concerned how essential service providers are misusing their powers thereby compromising the safety of other people,” said Barchok.
Early last month, a KPA staffer who had contracted Covid -19 made his way to Siaya county where he mingled with the locals before his situation got worse and he died.
