Wiper Patriotic Front Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has said he is willing to deputise Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna in the 2027 General Election if the opposition coalition settles on Sifuna as its presidential candidate.
Speaking during an interview on NTV on Monday, August 10, Kalonzo said he had no reservations about backing a Sifuna-Kalonzo ticket, arguing that the opposition must be willing to make compromises to defeat President William Ruto in 2027.
The former Vice President also expressed confidence that Sifuna would similarly support him should the opposition choose him as its presidential flagbearer.
“This time, we are not leaving anything to chance. We have agreed that whatever it takes. Of course, I have no problem at all in supporting Sifuna,” Kalonzo said.
Kalonzo maintained that his willingness to support Sifuna was not limited to one particular arrangement, saying he was prepared to back whichever ticket the opposition unanimously settles on.
“I will support this and the other. I am quite sure, and I can tell you, Sifuna has no problem supporting me either. I have no problem supporting him. I have no problem supporting Gachagua,” he said.
He listed several opposition figures who could potentially lead the coalition, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and former Cabinet Secretary Martha Karua.
“I hope I've answered your question. It's not a simple, yes, Sifuna or Kalonzo or Gachagua or Eugene Wamalwa or Martha Karua,” Kalonzo added.
His remarks come amid growing attention around Sifuna's potential presidential ambitions, with recent opinion polling placing the Nairobi senator ahead of several opposition figures.
A TIFA survey released on Friday, July 24, showed that 44 per cent of ODM supporters would prefer Sifuna as the party's presidential candidate if elections were held at the time of the survey.
President William Ruto came second among ODM supporters at 20 per cent, followed by former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i at 9 per cent, Kalonzo at 4 per cent and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino at 2 per cent.
Despite Sifuna's strong showing in the survey among ODM supporters, Ruto continues to enjoy significant backing nationally and has remained ahead of several potential challengers in other opinion polls.
Sifuna has in recent weeks stepped up political activities and held a series of rallies as he seeks to build support for a potential presidential bid.
The Nairobi senator has also maintained that the opposition should unite behind a single candidate in the 2027 election in an effort to defeat Ruto.
