Kenya’s new Chief Justice Martha Koome has promised to protect the independence of the judiciary.
Koome who was sworn in today stated that the running of the judiciary is protected in the constitution.
According to Koome anyone interfering with the running of the judiciary is interfering with the constitution.
“I have no difficulties to state that the independence of the Judiciary cannot be interfered with. Our decision making, hiring of staff is protected in the Constitution. Any party trying to direct how the Judiciary should decide a matter would be interfering with the Constitution,” stated Koome.
In her maiden speech after being sworn in Koome also urged the executive to ensure all budgetary allocations of the judiciary are supported.
“We cannot work when the chain is broken… The Executive has a responsibility to ensure budgetary allocations that supports the functions of the Judiciary,” she stated.
Supreme Court Judge William Ouko was also sworn in.
Ouko replaces Jacktone Ojwang who retired.
