Police Case: Extortion and bribery in exam transportation

Police are often tasked with the transportation of Kenya National Examination  Council exam papers since they are high security, high value consignment.

In 2021, a section of police officers from the central firearm section are divided over their treatment by one of their bosses.

The junior officers accuse their superior of asking for a cut of their daily perdiem so as to clear them to transport exams.

Failure to do so, the officers say, they are replaced immediately with the senior’s relatives from other stations.

The officers claim that they have to pay Sh500 from their perdiems or face the ‘sack’.

“When the officers come back from escorting the exams he forces every officer to give him Ksh 500 and the one who fails won’t be assigned to escort the exam again. The escort which ended on 21st March 2021 he was off duty and he directed the officer in charge to collect the money and send it to him through the phone. The officers their names not deleted at duty roster are his relatives and are not one of his strength”, the anonymous source wrote.
