Senate majority leader Irungu Kang’ata speaks tough on Sonko’s impeachment motion

Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata has assured Nairobi residents that justice will be served before the Senate in regards to the impeachment of the County Governor Mike Sonko.

The Senate Majority Leader stated that Sonko’s case will be examined objectively just other cases it has handled before.

“The interest of the Senate is to serve justice to the people of Nairobi and wider devolution cause. This case will be examined objectively devoid of partisanship and factionalism.

“On impeachment, Senate has executed its mandate fairly previously. The same case with Nairobi matters,” the lawmaker said.

Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator Kichumba Murkomen had earlier stated that the former Makadara Member of Parliament’s impeachment case mirrors the case of former Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waitutu.

He claimed that Mike Sonko’s case is state-sponsored as the 2/3 threshold was not achieved and fraudulent figures were announced.

He added that the impeachment was procured by force but luckily Sonko has documented evidence but should not rely on the Senate to win the case as one call with a call from the state can change anything.

Mike Sonko was impeached on Thursday 3 December after 88 out of 122 Nairobi Members of the County Assembly voted to remove him from office.

His impeachment came hours after the court refused to extend a directive barring MCAs from debating the motion.

The Employment and Labour Relations Court had issued an order suspending the planned impeachment pending the hearing of a case filed by the Governor.

Sonko was accused of refusing to sign for funds allocated for the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS), abuse of office, gross misconduct as well lack of physical and mental capability to run county affairs.

Ahead of the impeachment, MCAs allied to Sonko had complained that there was an attempt to hack into their emails for use in the zoom meeting that impeached the Governor.

Sonko on his part had claimed that the individuals trying to see his fall had resorted to intimidation and dirty tricks to achieve their selfish interests.
